Summer  2008                                                                    Volume 35 #3

Round 2 goes to Old Man River!!

HHS Museum       1

Mississippi River  1

We were hit with another flood in June, this one being much worse than the previous one. We received about 2-3 feet of water in the basement.  We fared much better than residents below New Boston and especially the Cedar & Iowa Rivers. They had floods of biblical proportions. As in 1993, we will see entire towns disappear or relocated to higher ground with a F.E.M.A. buyout.

For future reference, when the river gauge and Lock & Dam 14 reaches 14.5 feet or higher, we will get water in the basement.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the volunteers and to the Hampton Fire & Rescue, who literally saved the Museum.

UNEXPECTED GOOD NEWS!!!

We have settled our flood damage claim with FEMA.

Actual damages to Building………………$1,600.00

Insurance Reimbursement……………….. $5,240.00

Net Gain on Flood Loss…………………  $3,640.00

Per FEMA, we can legally keep the $3,640.00 and use the money as the Board of Directors sees fit to do so.

Apple Festival

THE BIGGEST EVENT OF THE YEAR!!

Mark your calendars for Saturday September 27 2008 from 12-4PM.  We have been having record crowds for this event for the past several years. This is Hampton’s most popular event.

We need all members to bake or donate a dessert or other goodies. Please bring them to either the Nelson’s on Friday evening (2nd Ave & 5th ST) or to the Museum on Saturday, no later than 11:30AM.

We will have a live demonstration of the apple cider press. The Bakery will be on the main floor. Dumplings and cold drinks will be served in the basement.

We will have a raffle for a handmade wooden tray, as well as a silent auction this year in the North room. We will also be selling Blimpie sandwiches, as we did last year. They were a big hit.

Several weeks prior to and including Apple Festival weekend, a silent auction will be set up in the North Display room.  HHS members will be allowed to preview and bid before the general public. Selling raffle tickets has not brought in too little for the past several years.

The silent auction will see each item with a big sheet containing the minimum price and the increment For each bid.  A painting might have a minimum price of $25.00 and each bid must be in increments of $1.00 or more.  If all the items sold, B&B would be guaranteed at least $26.00 for that item.  If any Item sheet contains no additional bids, the item is returned to the person donating that item.

We will be looking for new or gently used, vintage, collectibles and antiques.  The person donating the Item sets the minimum bid (hopefully realistic).  So far, we have a nicely framed gravestone rubbing, A dogwood quilt, a decorative bell, paintings.  Collectibles:  a Wizard of Oz toy set in fair condition, A plastic "Tree house with play figures".  Books:   A Bobbsey Twins (On a Houseboat), Volume 1&2, Bits & Pieces from the Hampton Town Crier, baskets, vintage records, images of Hampton, framed mirrors and more.

If you have any items for the silent auction, please contact Jane Cady at 752-0627.  I am in charge of the auction which will be set up in the north room in early September with winning bidders announced at 3:30 on apple festival day.   We all have a few rather nice items that we no need or want to store but are too good to put in a garage sale.  Why not donate those items to the museum For the auction?  All proceeds from the auction will go to the B&B building restoration fund.

Memorials

The Society received a generous contribution from Mr.  & Mrs. Jack Coder in memory of Jerry Harker who passed away this spring. Jerry was a Veteran and will be in the Veteran’s Honor Roll of Hampton.

Bill’s Oops Column

I neglected to thank Jane Cady for her Memorial donation for Marlene Carlson in the previous letter. My apologies Jane, thank you very much!

A Word About Dues

Our organization relies heavily on the generous & prompt payment of membership dues. If you haven’t paid for this year yet, please send your payment as soon as possible. Without you, there will be no museum in Hampton. If you are not sure if you have paid, look at the mailing label on this news letter. The year corresponds to the number on the label. If you have a 08, you are paid through September 2008. If you have any questions, please contact   Rocky Nelson @ 309-755-0362.

NEW SERVICE E-MAIL OF NEWSLETTER

You may choose to have your newsletter e-mailed to you instead of using paper. This would certainly help the Society if most members could do this.

Please contact Bill at 755-8370, or wbeals@mchsi.com, if you would like your newsletter e-mailed. To make sure that each member that signed up for e-mail delivery received an e-mailed copy, we will give you a paper copy & an e-mail copy, until you e-mail Bill Beals @ wbeals@mchsi.com and inform him that the new e-mail delivery is working. We want to make sure every member gets a copy!!

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

It is very important to keep our membership growing!  We ask that each member contact 1-2 friends, neighbors or relatives this month and tell them about the Society. Invite them to come to a meeting or event with you! We are working on new informational brochures to help, but our growth largely depends on you!
